HelpThe Rules of Texas Holdem Ranking Poker Hands

Poker hands are ranked as follows, from high to low. If two players have the same hand type, the winner is generally whoever uses the highest card to make the given hand type, and if that's equal, the remaining cards in the hands are compared. If those are equal, the hands tie. The suit of cards does not matter, except when splitting an uneven pot.

In these descriptions, you may see a hand abbreviated something like 89TJQ. In this notation, each number represents itself, T means 10, J is Jack, Q is Queen, and K is King. So 89TJQ would represent a hand containing an eight, a nine, a 10, a Jack, and a Queen.

In Texas Hold'em, each player has seven cards available to choose from to make the best five-card hand possible: the two hole cards and the five community cards.

Straight flush

Five cards of the same suit whose ranks are in ascending order. In other words, a hand that is both a straight and a flush.

Flush

All five cards of the same suit.

Straight

Five cards whose ranks are in ascending order, but not all of the same rank. The Ace may be high or low, but not both. For example, A2345 and TJQKA are straights, but QKA23 is not.

Full House

A pair, plus three of a kind. 333KK, for example would be called "threes over kings". When comparing two full houses, the three of a kind is worth more than the pair. For example 99922 beats 888KK.

Three of a Kind

Three cards of the same rank.

Two Pair

Two pair (of two separate ranks).

Pair

Two cards of the same rank.

High Card

If nobody has a pair or better, the hand goes to the player with the highest ranked card. Two is the lowest card value, followed by the numbers three through 10, then Jack, Queen, King, and Ace.

Splitting a Pot

If two or more players have hands that are equal in value, the pot is split evenly between them. If the pot cannot be evenly split, it is split as evenly as possible, and any extra chips go to the winners of a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker goes to the player with the highest ranked cards, but in this one case the suit does matter. Spades ranks the highest, followed in order by hearts, diamonds, and clubs.
